The Treasures of Thayer Street: Our Neighbors at 460B
Saturday, August 16, 2014
Since moving into our new spot at 460B Harrison, we've had the pleasure of meeting our amazing and creative neighbors who also have businesses in the building. We thought it might be a good idea for them to tell their story on how their business came to be and to describe their experience of working in the SoWa district. See their stories below!
Simplemente Blanco
Started by Fernanda Bourlot, Simplemente Blanco began ten years ago in 2004 and has been here in 460B Harrison Avenue since 2009.
Fernanda is originally from Buenos Aires and has been doing interior design her entire life. As an interior design firm, everything in her shop is handmade and features white as the base of the products with accents of earth tones, gold, and silver. Taking a look around at her products, she explains that her brand is truly what she believes in and puts her heart into--she even uses every single product in her own home!
For the summer, most of her items are made of linen and cotton fabrics, and for winter she uses felts and flannel. For her process, she sketches out the items first, sources the materials, and finally produces the prototypes. Branches of her brand include, but aren't limited to a newborn section called "la inocencia (bebes)," a men's line, eating/table centerpieces, and "Quotidian," which is the everyday wear that's less expensive.
Talking about her space at 460B, she says it "feels like being in the Caribbean on a vacation..it's light, bright, and white!"

Galatea Fine Art
Galatea Fine Art is large collaborative contemporary art gallery that showcases various kinds of fine arts media. Owner, Marjorie Kaye, started the business in November of 2009 and has been here since then. As an artist herself, Marjorie's passion is found in scuplting with nature acting as an inpsiration for her art. "I'm really into nature and its relationship with ourselves," she explains.
With over 60 members, Marjorie does an open call for artists every two years and, depending on membership, does a solo or group showing of the artists' work. As a result, it becomes a team effort to upkeep the gallery and make it the beautiful space we see there today!
On 460B Harrison, she loves being around so much art, galleries, and studios, and explains how nice it is becoming a part of a community. "Art should be about the heart and spirit. We're all artists including me...it's just about opening a venue for everyone to show their work."
Galatea is currently showcasing "The New England Collective V," which is the fifth annual juried show where art gets chosen to be displayed. To find more information on this exhibition and Galatea, see their site here.
Giardini di Sole
Selling items exclusively from Italy, Giardini di Sole has been at 460B Harrison since February of 2010. It is owned by Libby Morris and her two partners Sandy and Josephine. The brand has actually been around since 2007 with a showroom in Vancouver and first began selling garden and outdoor furniture. Since then, their products have expanded to home furnishings and an expansive tabletop ceramic collection.
Every product has a direct connection to an artisan in Italy due to her partner Josephine living in Rome as well as Libby's experience of living there for four years. She describes the brand as being a "shared passion of the Italian culture." As a result, the products have a classic, but also contemporary vibe to them that can't be found anywhere else.
About the SoWa neighbrohood and 460B, Libby says it's a "funky place to be." "Everyone here is doing something special and unique," she explains, "but the challenge is for people to find where you are."
Within the next couple of months, Libby might do a cooking class and discussion with her partner Josephine. You can find more information and updates on their site here.
